HAVE A GREAT TIME AND HELP US TO RAISE MONEY FOR OUR PROJECTS BY BEING SPONSORED FOR OUR CROSS-BAY WALK
What? The walk from Hest Bank to Kents Bank/Grange over Sands is the traditional route across Morecambe Bay, linking North Lancashire and Furness before the coming of modern roads and railways. Nowadays, every year hundreds of people of all ages walk this route for charity. It’s a memorable experience which everyone from Lancaster should try. For further details and pictures see http://www.virtual-lancaster.net/visitors/baywalk.htm. Don’t be put off by the warnings: you’ll be perfectly safe with our guide!
When? The walk will start from Hest Bank at 2.30 p.m. on 21 August 2010 and will be led by Alan Sledmore, an experienced guide. The walk takes approximately four hours and we should be back in Hest Bank at around 7.30 p.m.
Where? The walk starts from the shore just beyond the level crossing on the main West Coast railway line at the foot of Station Road, Hest Bank. Nearest post code is LA2 6EA. Free car parking is available. Alternatively, Stagecoach Bus 55 leaves Lancaster for Carnforth at 13.50 and takes 12 minutes: get off at the corner of Peacock Lane and Hest Bank Lane, cross the canal bridge and go down Station Road. There are buses back to Lancaster every 40 minutes in the evening (and a pub near the bus stop).
Cost As we are a charity, people raising sponsorship money will be charged a reduced rate (£6 for adults, £3 for children). This charge covers the guided walk itself and a return trip by coach from Grange over Sands back to Hest Bank. Please give your fees in advance to Annabel Orr (see below for details) when you register.
How do I register? You MUST register for the walk, so that we can tell the guide how many people to expect, and contact you in case of last-minute changes. Contact Annabel Orr on 01524 842890, 07545 314750 (phone or text) or email baywalk AT fairfieldassociation DOT org.
How do I get sponsorship forms? You can download a sponsorship form via this link!
How much should I raise? As much as you possibly can! Ask all your family and friends, far and wide, to help with the cause!
What should I wear? It is best to wear plimsolls, trainers or walking sandals on your feet (i.e. shoes that let the water out, not wellingtons, as they may fill up with water): don’t wear anything that will be wrecked by salt water or mud. Some people walk across the sands in bare feet, but that can be uncomfortable, as the mud/sand can dry into hard ridges. The best body-wear is probably shorts and a tee-shirt, especially if it is warm and dry: you will be wading when we ford the river Kent. You should bring, or share, a small rucksack containing plenty of sun screen, maybe a hat, a snack and a bottle of water. It’s sensible to bring at least a light outer shell and you may want to take more, depending on the weather. You can also order a Fields Campaign T-shirt to wear on the day!
